Miller's time comes to an end

I'm in mourning.

Miller Nurseries has been absorbed by Stark Bros. Old news to some, I'm sure, but the catalog got tucked away during the holiday rush and I'd missed the announcement.

Miller's was our go-to nursery before we discovered St. Lawrence Nurseries near the Canadian border. Miller's was a short drive away, south of Canandaigua, and they carried a large assortment of plants developed by the Geneva Ag Station.

In fact, we purchased yet another sweet cherry tree (we're having such difficulty getting them to grow) last May. This one, a black tartarian, also died. It should be under warranty, so we'll see what happens after we contact Stark.

The spring catalog they sent doesn't list the tartarian, so I hope they replace it with something comparable.

The black gold tree we planted 18 months ago stayed happy all last year. We even had two individual cherries that ripened. I presume the birds enjoyed them.

Best of luck to the Miller team. We will miss you.

I knew something big was up shortly after John's brother died. None of the younger generation is interested in the nursery business, and both John and Barbara were looking very drawn. This was not an easy decision for them. I'll have to dig my catalog out and read the announcement, too; like you, I was too busy to do more than stack incoming catalogs.

Gee, thanks, Sue.
That provides a bit of context.
I didn't know the family, so I wasn't aware of their change in circumstance.
As far as the next generation goes, that seems to be par for the course for so many small businesses - especially farm-related ones. It's so sad.
